Help for oily hair

March 1, 2010

Q: My 9 year old daughter has oily hair. I try and only bathe the girls every other day, but with her, it has to be every day because her hair just gets gross! Is there any product geared towards kids with oily hair?

A: Surprisingly, the answer is to wash her hair less. Wash her hair once a week until the pH balance is corrected. This could take up to 3 weeks.

Until then, you can use hair powders or corn starch in between washing. Just sprinkle the powder on your hands and rub it through your daughters hair to refresh it.

Also, change to a healthy diet and try to reduce combing and brushing her hair as it stimulates oil product.

My daughters had the same problem at that age. My oldest daughter is 13 and her hair has gotten better. I think it is from puberty.

I don’t agree with washing her hair less. You want her to look and feel her best. I just committed to helping her wash her hair everyday. The ONLY shampoo I found to help was Neutrogean anti-residue. Also, DO NOT use any conditions. These make it worse.

    Good Luck.
