Regarding Bullying

October 12, 2011
Darla,
I just read your article about bullying and while I agree on most
points, I have to disagree with you about some others. I didn't see
the news story you saw,but I can tell you that it isn't always
possible to move a child to another school. Our daughter was harassed
in one school she went to for being gay. We were living in a small
town on the east coast then and there was no other high school to send
her to. In another state our son was being bullied (we're military so
we move about every six months to two years) and that area required
you to get permission from the state to change schools. Also, the
parents might not have the financial means to homeschool or move to
another school district. Why don't we put the blame on the bullies
themselves, and the parents who raise them, instead of the parents of
the victims, or in the case of my kids, the victims themeselves? I
agree that parents need to raise strong children and tell them how
wonderful they are, and to let them know they should stand up for
others and fight back, though as you yourself can point out that can
backfire. When our son stood up to kids who bullied him HE was the one
who got suspended for three days for fighting back. Our daughter was
harassed by a boy who made anti gay comments in class. His father was
the science teacher and he made the same remarks to his students. When
I complained she ended up getting D in science. Lucky for us we moved
the next school year. That's the one good thing about all this moving
we do. The school they're in now is great, it's very tolerant. Here
the nerds are the cool kids, at least that's what my kids and all
their friends tell me.

    Renee,

Thank you for that letter. I am sure every situation is different. But, at the end of the day, if your son is being tortured in school, you need to take action. My point is parents cannot wait around for the school to do the right thing. The news story I was talking about, this young boy who took his life, was harassed and tormented. His parents should have removed him from that school. It just breaks my heart. And yes, bullying has to be recognized as a crime. And the schools need to have a no tolerance stance. Your children are lucky you were able to move.
