Summertime is here

June 1, 2017

So I every year I say ‘this is the summer,’ and I plan a slew of family activities that my children will hold onto. I want them to remember the great summers of their childhood. And every year we hit the road and as any of you who have been following me know. I think the summer road trip is the glue that holds your family together. With all the insanity of it, you are stuck together and it causes a great opportunity for bonding. So pick a spot. Make sure it is at least three hours away. You don’t have to spend a lot of money either. While gas is expensive, you can pack a cooler for your food and you can do a day trip without staying at a hotel. Pack your car with cards, games, snacks, pillows, and blankets. If you get tired, pull over to a rest stop and take a nap. Don’t rush your trip. Half the fun is stopping at the sites along the way. One of my best childhood memories was driving across country with my family. We got stuck in a sand storm, our car broke down in the desert, we ate strawberry shortcake at a farm in Iowa, we saw buffalo in Montana, and we rode donkeys down the Grand Canyon. I don’t remember the hotels, but I remember the sites and food. One night we slept on the park benches at a rest stop in Colorado. So pack up your old truck and hit the road with your children. Even if you are just going across state, go someplace!
