Darla’s Schedule

Every Day

  • Make the bed as soon as you wake up.
  • Wash up—do your make-up, throw on some jeans and a tee.
  • Wipe down the bathroom counter when you leave the bathroom in the morning. Wipe mirrors, my kids always spit toothpaste onto them, I keep Windex wipes under the sink.
  • Do a load of laundry, every morning, fold it, and put it away as soon as it’s dry. If you leave the clothes in the dryer, they’ll wrinkle and you’ll have to iron.
  • Get the kids off to school and immediately straighten up the kitchen
  • Sit for a few minutes and meditate, pray, stretch.
  • Do that day’s chores: Vacuum, bathrooms, dusting.
  • When the kids come home from school, collect their hats, coats, and shoes and put them away. After first grade, start to ask them to do it themselves.
  • Make dinner as the children do their homework. Clean up as you go. I never sit down to eat with a mess in the kitchen.
  • Playtime.
  • Get the children ready for bed.
  • Relaxation time for mommy.

Monday and Friday:

  • Vacuum


  • Clean the bathrooms


  • Change and wash the sheets (yes, I only do this once a week, unless a child throws up on the bed or there’s some other disaster. Ladies, let yourselves off the hook—I don’t know any woman who changes her sheets more than that, so don’t worry).


  • Dust (I like to dust with a damp cloth. I find it collects the particles instead of just moving them around).


  • Shop for groceries

Saturday and Sunday:

  • I do a quick straightening out in the morning, fluffing pillows, maybe a load of laundry, and that’s it. I spend my weekend with my husband and my children having fun, being outside, having some time to myself while Bill watches the children, and cooking big dinners. I don’t spend my weekends cleaning. We do often have company on the weekends, and often I entertain and spend a lot of time in the kitchen.

Once a Month

  • Clean inside the refrigerator
  • Straighten out the drawers and closets
  • Vacuum the drapes and wipe down the blinds


  • Every few months wash the windows
  • Vacuum the ceilings and dust the chandeliers
  • Deep-clean the floor and carpets (I use a steam cleaner)
  • Wipe down the walls. My children get fingerprints on everything, so when you paint be sure you tell the man at the hardware store that you have children and you want washable paint.
  • Wipe down your kitchen cabinetry. Clean first with a damp cloth with a little wood cleaner, then use some lemon oil to make them shine.
  • Each spring give your house a complete overhaul. Take a couple of weeks and clean the entire house thoroughly from top to bottom—even changing your air conditioning filters.
  • Each fall get your chimneys swept.
  • Have a licensed technician make sure your burner is clean and working for the upcoming winter and Clean your radiators before the heat comes on.
  • Check all the batteries in the smoke detectors.

    Thanks so much for this. I’m still learning how to do this new job of mine to every one’s (and mine) satisfaction. I tend to be a perfectionist and need checklists for this brain of mine that doesn’t always remember everything out of my sight. This schedule not only gives me a NOT overwhelming checklist but a comparison to my own schedule to make sure I’m not over or under doing it. Thanks again!

    Thank you so much! i’m newly engaged and living in a 3 bedroom 2.5 bathroom townhouse with my fianc. Let me tell you living in a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom apt and cleaning it wasn’t that hard but this house is so much more work and on top of that i’m a Nursing student in an accelarated program so i fall behind in my house work and lean on my future husband a lot! This schedule helps a lot! but i wonder how do you handle your husband and kids leaving everything where they eat or drink at. My FH does this all the time, i’ll leave the kitchen with not a plate or spot in it and i come home from school and find cups at our coffee table or cups in our sink. how do you get them to help out more? thank you

    I love this schedule, I printed it and put it up in my coffee cupboard so that when I make my pot of coffee first thing I see it!! I do alter it to fit my little ones schedule too!!

    I happen to come across her book Happy Housewives at our public library and it was such a blessing, I can’t tell you how grateful I am to have stumbled upon it. It changed my entire outlook towards being home after having to leave a very successful career due to unavoidable circumstances. I only wish I had found it earlier. Thank you thank you thank you. Love her thought process and her schedule and ideas about organisation.
