Holiday Budgeting Tips for Right Now:

  1. Make sure your budget includes all expenses (gifts, entertaining, decorations, food).
  2. Try to trim your gift list (cut out adults or do Secret Santa instead).
  3. Start crafting gifts now, while there is time (frames, scrapbooks, quilts).
  4. Pick up a gift or two a week to spread out the bills.
  5. Vow to only shop sales.
  6. Combine on-line orders with your friends to qualify for discounts and to reduce shipping fees.
  7. Don’t pay delivery fees, order early and use free standard shipping when you can.
  8. Use Ebates to get money back on your holiday purchases.
  9. Buy a $10- $20 gift card to your favorite grocery store every week or two and you will have enough saved up for your holiday meal.
  10. Make some of your holiday decorations.

Holiday Cheer on a Budget

j0423737.jpg

This week, Happy Housewife Jonnell (apilotswife) was kind enough to share her money savings tips for holiday cheer.  Thanks Jonnell!

Remember to send in your tips to me and they will be featured on the Budget Page (email me: dina@happyhousewivesclub.com).

Parties:

I love to throw parties and have guests over, but it can cost a fortune to feed a bunch or even a small crowd. I plan pot lucks. I will provide the main course (sandwiches, chicken, meatballs, etc.) and I have everyone bring a dish or dessert. I have some who bring paper products and soft drinks or adult beverages. The only thing I am out is the meat for the meal and everyone chips in with something that will be used or eaten for the night. It saves me money and time for not having to run out to the store and collect it all. It makes clean up a snap also..

Christmas cards:

I am huge scrap-booker. I have lots of rubber stamps and ink pads. I go to my local Dollar Store or BigLots and get a package of blank cards, that fold in half (4×6) I create a front with a nice stamp that I have, then on the inside attach a photo of my family or kids and then sign at the bottom with a gold or silver gel pen (which I also found at BigLots ) on the back of the card, I will add: Made with Christmas cheer from (our family) and add the date. Rubber stamps can be found a lot of craft stores or discount stores,as can the ink pads.

Today is my kind of day!  Cyber Monday is here.  From the comfort of your home, you can shop for the holidays.  I like that I can shop for the best deals / comparison shop without driving all over town.  Many stores are offering free shipping or reduced shipping, which sweetens the deals even further.  Here is where you’ll find me shopping on the net today:

Don’t Get Scammed

Happy Housewife Kelly was kind enough to pass a long a heads up about a credit card scam that is easy for you to overlook, especially if you are not in the habit of really looking at your statements.

Black Friday!!

 j0402648.jpg

For some, Christmas shopping the day after Thanksgiving  — on Black Friday — is a family ritual:  set the alarm clock for the crack of dawn and then go burn off the turkey running around scooping up deals.  This year, retailers are worried and the deals might be better than usual.  In fact, the deals have started earlier.

Give Thanks, and a Helping Hand

j0422532.jpg

This week, let’s not wait until Thursday to give thanks and to be appreciative of all our blessings.  Instead, let’s think about all that we do have, and those who are less fortunate.  Every day, take an aspect of your life that you are most thankful for: food, shelter, family, love, friends are just some examples, and then find a way to share that with someone who is in need of your blessings.

Question of the Week

j0409461.jpg

Dear Dina,

My kids are young (5 and 7) and they don’t understand that times are tough, and I don’t want them to have to think about these adult things, anyway.  Whenever I go to a store with them, they want to buy something.  I’m already nervous about the economy, our personal household budget, and the holidays.  What can I do without scaring them?
