OMG Darla that is so funny about the crazy gray hair. I found one of those just last year jutting from my jaw - I nearly wrecked my car trying to pull it out while looking in my rear view mirror! And I wondered, just how many people SAW that crazy gray hair and NEVER said ANYTHING. My hair stylist, my dentist, my personal trainer, my children, my friends, my husband(!), etc. . . I carefully study every inch of my face now. You never know when one of those suckers will pop out again!

Darla, I do not have teenagers yet. I will in about 11 years. I am 24 and have two sons (2 yrs old and 5 months old). I don't know if I will be much help considering, but I will be praying for you. There is only so much you can do as their mother. Sometimes teens can just be mean. I know when I was still at home I was sometimes a jerk to my mom. I also know that as a parent it can be hard to let go of your children and let them grow up. You spend so much time in their younger years taking care of them only to have them push you away when they get older. I don't know what that feels like yet. I am sure I will one day. I am sure it will feel like my heart is being ripped out and torn to shreds, but God will not give you something you are not able to handle. It may be hard as all get out to deal with emotionally. It won't be easy. You know, I think a lot of parents have this misconception that their own kids could never act like total jerks. Then when it happens it takes them by total surprise and breaks their heart even more. I have heard from a lot of older ladies in church and my mom has said this too....Our children are gifts from God. They are never ours but are on loan from God. It is our job to raise them to adulthood and hopefully raise them to serve and love the Lord. Things that are worth while are not usually easy. Darla, things may be heartbreaking and frustrating right now but the one thing my mom keeps reminding me of even now is that one day my own children will more than likely have the same difficulties dished out to them by their own children. One more thing before I end this. I watched my older brother give my mom such a hard time. From about the time he was 15 or so and when he was 25 (it took 10 years) he held his son for the first time, he never realized he could love someone so much. He has since then told mom how much he loves her and how sorry he is for the things he put her through. Now he is 27 with his son (almost 3 now) and my little nephew is a rowdy little guy. My brother has a brain tumor and I am sure he is praying that he can make it to see his son be a teenager. I am sure your children love you, Darla. I think the best thing you can do for them now is pray for them. I will be praying for you and your family.

Try not to take it personally... let them break free from you, to be closer in the end. Its like training for the marathon its hard work but it feels good when you cross the finishing line... <3

Hi!
I still didn´t buy your book, but wanting to.
I love this text. And, as Niki-B said, it is my new year´s resolution too. It doesn´t mean I was not proud of being a housewife, but sometimes we tend to forget, specially in a country like mine, where if you say you are a "sahm" or housewife, people tend to look at you as if you are lazy because you don´t want to work outside!
Thank you so much Darla!

There is no secret to my life. Any member of my club or any one who has read my book knows my husband is a tv exec and I had a great career. I am not lecturing anyone on how anyone failed. That article I am referring to the writer, talks about how women who don't go back to work full time are failures. How about that? How about women who look at me and other full time stay at home moms as failures? As if we are useless because we are not working? And my point was would you WANT to work full time? Not do you have to. I am constantly up against feminist career chicks who think women who do not have careers are wasting their education or sitting home eating bon bons. That pisses me off. If you were a member of my club you would know that I am always supportive of any woman who works to help her family. Of course. In fact, I have always promoted moms getting part time jobs, going back to school, and building at home businesses. You should read my book.

I'm sorry, but Darla, I don't think you're in a place to comment on this issue. Didn't you yourself have a good many years to pursue a career before you gave it up for your children? And then you used that reputation to launch your at-home, mom-blogging business? Try getting a college degree and working just 1.5 years before having to quit because you're pregnant!

You have to worry about the family budget? Isn't your husband a network executive? Making six figures, I'd guess? My husband barely makes $50,000 a year, and we stretch that to pay for the mortgage (on a 1400 square foot home), student loans, car payment, everyday expenses, and two kids. We don't have a dime in retirement accounts, and barely have savings to put away each month.

So it's not about being selfish that makes some women go to work to use their educations. It's about trying to provide the best future they can for their families. We don't all get to have a great career and a rich husband, Darla. We do the best we can. You are not the one to lecture us on how we failed, because I'm sure enough of us have enough guilt.
