Create a Food Storage

Food storage is one of the most important things to think about when preparing for an emergency. In many situations, we must prepare ourselves and our families to have enough food to last at least one year. Gardening can also be helpful when you prepare your food storage plan.

Creating a Food Storage supply can seem like an intimidating project, but if you take baby steps over the course of a year, it can be easy to purchase, store and use your food storage. Just purchase a few things per week.

The following list contains enough food to last for one year for two people. You can adjust accordingly, or use one of these calculators to figure out how much and of what items you would need.

Emergency Kit

Creating a small Emergency Pack is essential when you need to get out of your house in a rush. A pack should be loaded with essential items to last at least 72 hours, and you should have one for every family member. Creating these packs could be a great activity for a family night, and make sure to get the kids involved. If you don’t want to create them yourselves, you can purchase pre-loaded ones at places like The Ready Store, Quake Kare, or Shelf Reliance.

The kits should be updated at least every 6 months to make certain the food is fresh, medication isn’t expired and things like clothing, credit cards and medical information and emergency phone contacts are up to date.
