View Full Version : Thinking women?

So a few days ago I got an email from a woman who asked me to deactivate her account because she 'signed up for happy housewife talk and not political talk.'

I just thought of her right now as I am watching the tea parties on tv. I don't understand, I am confused.

Are housewives brain dead? Did our brain fall out of our ass when we pushed our babies out? What does that mean 'happy housewife talk?'

Can we only talk about recipes and sex, gossip and kids? God help me if all I could do was sit around and gossip about other women or celebrity junk.

Who does this 'political talk' affect more than us housewives? I can't think of a bigger group. From the family budget to healthcare. From your child's education to your retirement. From the right to fight against vaccinations to your right to defend your home.

Abigail Adams stood on her front yard with her rifle to defend her babies while her hubby was signing the Constitution in Philly.

This country is based on the voter. You need to be involved and think about the future of your children.

Whether you are a democrat or republican, independent or green party...... why wouldn't you want to be aware, involved, informed, and educated?

During WW1&2 it was the women,, the wives, the mommies who held this country together and their families together while their husbands were off fighting or defending which is what I like to say.

So I have been accused of being a pro-war, anti-government, Obama hating nazi (which is a total joke)

I also have been accused of being a Stepford wife. Well that definition means the wife has had a labotomy. Um... no, not me I am still thinking and standing up for what I want for me, and my family.

You're like the furthest thing from a Stepford wife Darla. We can look like them, but why act like them?

I asked Matt if he would like a Stepford wife, or someone who just sits back and doesn't really have an opinion on anything and he quoted, almost word for word, one of our favourite comics, Ron White:

"If I could offer one piece of advice to the planet, it would be this: Don't marry for looks alone, and I'll tell you why. In a few years, when her's breasts start sagging, she can get plastic surgery, have them lifted. If her belly gets too big, she can get a tummy tuck and have a belly like a cheerleader. If her vision goes bad, you can have LASIK surgery and have 20/20 vision. If her hearing goes bad, they can install a device in her ear that will give you hearing as clear as it was the day you were born. But let me tell you something, folks: You can't fix stupid. There's not a pill you can take; there's not a class you can go to. Stupid is forever."

I know there's a difference between stupid and ignorant, but still.

This is the problem of America. You have an either/or stance which makes it difficult to continue friendships in its purest form. But also it affects the world, though. Somehow, my instinct told me just before Obama's victory, as things turned ugly here on this website, something's gotta give and now it's proven.
What a shame, really. Those who don't agree with where one's politic's stance is, up to a certain point they could express what they think. Then just move away from it like I did. Just temporarily; added by my lifestyle on moving to various countries, I couldn't be present on this website more regularly. All, I could think is that we all have to be adults and be responsible in our behaviour toward others especially here on this happy housewives site. My reason to join here was to be happy in sharing our ups and dows and not to be enemies and reduced ourselbes on name callings, etc. In this case, I do agree with one friend of mine who says that today, humanity has degraded.
If on housewives website the ladies could be so hostile to one another, which confirms that nothing good lasts forever, then I guess I can say one shouldn't be surprised to see violence anywhere.
I'm a member of this website from day one and will be for as long as I could. I still hope for the best for this website.
Darla, I couldn't agree more with you that it is inevitable for politics to be discussed on this website. Keep up the good job, even though at times it could be tough. America is currently having some tough times in what with the economy, unemployment, inflation, etc. Added by Obama's victory that placed the Republican Party even harder to defend its conservatism.
But I'm reading Obama's book right now just because I have to be open to the man regardless of my preference for McCain to win. Obama is a good, intelligent, a 3-dimentional man, and very globally in tune, given to his culturally rich background. America should feel proud to have him as their president.
Since I'm not American, I can't say to you, ladies, let's join hands in making America great again. Nevertheless, I do want that, because America represents goodness since I was a child. God Bless!

I know there's a difference between stupid and ignorant, but still.

Stupid is intentional ignorance. You have the information readily available to you and you choose not to obtain it.

That is a shame. You aren't required to be part of all the threads, she could have picked which to post on. Maybe she didn't realize this (or maybe the predominant views when she was reading were opposite those of hers and she was offended?). Sometimes people are more upset not at political talk, but at talk that is not directly in line with their own views.

I think that as a voter it is our civic duty to be reasonably informed about political issues. As the saying goes, democracy requires an informed electorate. As a mother I feel a moral responsibility to be educated on politics. Our children are our future! Many of the pressing political and social issues do/will affect them. As mothers, I believe, it is our call and our duty, regardless of religious background, political party, clutural differences, socioeconomic status, etc. to stand up and fight for the freedom of our country, our faith, and our family!

I love what Meta wrote. It is nice to see what someone who is not American thinks about America. Latley, It would seem as if everyone thinks poorly of America and the American people.

I have a friend who is one of those women who pretend life is all unicorns and rainbows, and would rather worry about the fine lines collecting around her eyes than what is happening during the G20 summits. She researched our presidential hopefuls...on election day. She thought Martin Luther King Jr was the founder of the Lutheran Church. (Not political, but still pretty darn stupid.) She is VERY beautiful, but I wouldn't trade my mind for her looks. (And I love her, despite my harsh criticism.)

In my family, I'm the one who reads all the info about the candidates and the issues, and I tell Hubby how to vote. He doesn't have the time or energy to do the research because his job requires so much of him, so he's handed that responsibility over to me. He trusts me to make the best choices for our family. So, I have to know this stuff, and that means I have to talk about it.

I don't understand women who live their lives in a bubble. "Oh, that's too big an issue for me to worry about. Teehee." While I know that I alone can't make a difference, I also know that knowledge is power, and I know what our government is supposed to be. And I want my children and grandchildren to be able to live in a country where they are encouraged to be independent thinkers, free to worship as they choose, free to speak their minds, free to provide for themselves. That stuff matters to me. So I have to know the facts so that I can I work to defend and protect what is mine.

While I do NOT think housewives are brain dead or only able to discuss celebrity junk and gossip maybe that is not what her need was or why she came to this site? Everyone has different needs and reasons for being here .....some may not have any housewife friends and like the tips, recipes and ideas, others maybe looking to improve themselves in their housewife job, others for friendships - it's varied I'm sure. Maybe in real life this person gets enough political talk from her hubby or real life friends??? Maybe that is nto what she needed from this site....I never participated before in the bible studies/books that Katie and Kelly were leading...does that mean I don't care about God? Am not a Christian? NO - it means that in real life I am in a MOMS group at my church and we were doing a pretty involved bible study so I felt like that "cup" was being filled already.......

Very well said, Jill. You're right in that we become involved in different things, (i.e study groups, websites, etc.) because hopefully, it fulfills a need in our individual lives that will enrich and bless us. And if it doesn't...well, we move on to find something that does!! So I hope this woman will find a site that suites her needs.

i like Obama - can i still hang out here LOLOLOLOLOL

i love the talk here - alllll of it. even when things get heated, if you just dont take it personally and realize that we all have different opinions and, of course, not everyone agrees with everyone all the time...its fine

we women need to take these things - well, not so personally. i may not agree with someone's politics --- doesnt mean i dont like them. and i like to discuss - hear all points of view. doesnt mean i'll change my mind, but hey, i may learn something i didnt know!

More importantly, what do you all think of Bo Obama?

I was upset to see him. I wanted a tiny, cute and cuddly puppy for the girls. A poodle? That dog is going to get so big!

I am a big fan of Big Dogs. I have a Saint Bernard.

I think Bo is a cool looking Dog. I think it is a funny, because he looks like a rotten little pup. It makes the White house seem a little more exciting. You can best believe the President will be pickin up some dog poop. This dog has received full page spreads in News Papers across the country. That is One cool dog!

Well, if I did not like you for your book, I would like you for being a Saint Bernard Gal;)

Saints are great are they not, they are like having another Mother in the house. Her name is "Butterfly" but I call her "Big Mama".

Sorry to change the subject on the thread, but I figured I am talking to the boss, so it must be okay.

Jia.. we love that joke in our house. It is so true. I have always told my daughter to make sure she can talk about sports and politics and she will never be at a loss for words around a ( man) boy. I have to say though.. there is a difference between smart and having common sense though. My son dated this girl for a couple of months that spoke several languages , made theDean's list every semester at college ect but she didnt understand the directions on boxed macaroni and cheese. He also dated a girl who asked him what was the name of the lake at Lake George. Thank goodness neither one of these women will be the mother of my grandchildren.

And for the record.. we have a Austraillian Shepard who is huge and a little beagle. They are quite the pair together.

See, these are the things that scare me in America! People who have no common sense are frightening. Someone who's all puffed up with knowledge but can't figure out directions on a box is obviously not all that. And the Lake George girl reminds me of the people on the street from Jay Leno's show!

That is the cutest thing ever. My son has a friend who named his dog Scooby.

Regarding the accusation of you being a Stepford Wife- This is misguided and funny because in the remake of the movie with Glen Close and Matthew Broderick and that Australian actress it was the Glen Close character that masterminded the whole thing. We women have the power. haaaaaa. (evil laugh)

I think in this day and age, that we cannot be totally involved and cocooned in our homes, sheilding ourselves from politics. it SHOULD be discussed (properly & respectfully) as it affects each and every one of us.

Politics is society (albeit the upper echelons), and if we refuse politics, do we refuse society? Do we just stay at home and forget about the rest of our respective countries and the world as a whole?

As Housewives & Mothers, we should have a keen and active interest as every decision in a democratic society has an effect on our children, and our children's children. We may ultimately be individuals, but when they become groups, they get powerful. How can this happen if we don't discuss?

I feel this is an even more pertinent point for 2009 than any other year due to the global financial crisis, the world turmoil & political unrest.

"Little Hinges Swing Big Doors" - we all may be little hinges, but together, we can swing big doors, but if we can't even DISCUSS then we can't influence.

and as for hair, babies, gossip, wrinkles, housework. Yes, we all talk about it, but we are not uneducated women who have a "stepford" personality bypass. There is more out there!!

(One thing on Obama though - yes he looks great, sounds great etc, but said some really uninformed things to our government about the joining the Euro currency, as a country we were like WHAT?!! That put more countries in recession in Europe about 2 years ago, now is not the time. HOMEWORK Obama, please!!!)

I think you are logical, I think you know what you are talking about and you really are a model of what is missing in the world. Being a Happy Housewife is I think the most important thing you can be. Doing your best for your family. Doing your best for yourself! People who don't get it are people that I feel sad for. i am THRILLED that you all are politically minded!!

I have no interest in shopping, shoes, celeb gossip... not that there is anything wrong with those things!! you gotta have a hobby :)...I just personally have no interest in them and it is awesome on here that you can always find something willing to talk about what you want to talk about ...which for me, is usually politics!
