Really don't take any motherly advice from me because I suck! After my son glued my designer bag to my kitchen island, broke my china rooster, told me to 'die I hate you' and elbowed his siter in the ribs (I could name at least 20 other things he did) I went and got him a puppy today.

Rewind to last summer. I told Connor if he kept his 4.0 average going into middle school I would get him whatever he wanted as a gift. Okay, so he chooses a puppy. Since school ended and he came home proudly with his report card excited that he got his perfect score and proclaiming he wanted a dog.

Okay, we have two huge, furry, bearded collies. Do I need another dog? I say no! So since the last day of school until now my son has cried every day over this. So yesterday I caved and today I bought a west highland terrier. She is really the cutest thing with the BIGGEST MOUTH!

So after a day of yelping, (normal for all puppies) and pee and poop, my son is exhausted and just confessed that he probably should have listened to me.

Help me! Will me your energy girls. I need him to let go of this puppy idea so I can give it away tomorrow! I regret doing it and he is yelping right now!

I am so stupid!

Awww...I love Westies. We had one before we had kids - and I agree they are very loud. I wish I had some advice for you but my kids are only 3 and 4 so haven't been there yet.

Westies are great dogs. I'm sure you'll have no problem finding a home for it.

Make sure you find a rescue group in your area, don't just drop it off at the town pound where they euthanize. If you go to Petfinder.com and put your zip, you can find a rescue group.

If you can't find a home for it, you can drive it up here and I will take it from you and find a home for it. My mom works at a no-kill shelter and a dog like that would get a great home in about five minutes.

OMG Darla, you're normal! I love it! Let us know what happens, (I could use the advice:) or leave the back gate open! Is Connor the same age as mine? 12 -- I see a lot of the same behaviors in your description. Comical now that it's over, but at the time hair raising!

What a nightmare! Good luck finding a home for the puppy.

LOL Darla, your so funny.

I have a Scottish Terrier, and there is a reason they are called "terror-iers". LOL

Wish I was close by, I'd take the dog. My dog needs a buddy and we looked everywhere for a Westie and they were $$$.

Good luck with this one. If you want to ship him across country, I'll take him.

I have a Scottie mix, and yes, there is a reason they are called Terror-iers. I love him though. I've never met a Westie I didn't like though, they seem to be a bit better in the terrier group.

Darla, I think you have post-dogdom depression! (It's the feeling you get when you get a new dog and say What did I do?). Maybe you should hang in there for a while before deciding to give him away. If you can handle bearded collies, I'm sure you'll get used to this little guy soon enough.

As a dog lover and advocate for dogs I am saddened by this. A dog is a big responsibility and one should not buy one if they are not in it for the long haul. To me, they are a part of the family and are not disposable like trash.

Theresa don't get all upset. I have two gorgeous well cared for pups. I was kind of being sarcastic with my thread last night. I stayed up all night holding this puppy who was yelping out of control. Me giving it away is not throwing it in the garbage like trash. She is so cute. But so annoying. My collies never acted this insane.

I agree with you, but I don't think we have to worry about this dog. Even if Darla does surrender it (to a rescue group, not a shelter), it will get a home easily. And I will seriously take it if she can't find anywhere else : )

Darla, I know you will do the right thing, it just struck a cord in me because I work with placing rescue dogs both here in the states and in Mexico.

I am NOT one to give advice on this - I have regretted MY decision since it happened Nov 06! LOL I am VERY allergic to dogs and cats and my kids begged and begged for a dog and I caved and bought what some call a "teddy bear" some call it a Shichon ....Tiffany is a Shihtzu Bischon mix - perfect for me with allergies as she doesn't shed and is hypo allergenic but I agree with you Darla cute but INSANE! I think it's those little breeds - she still barks all the time! Drives me CRAZY! She jumps on furniture, sleeps all day like a cat and won't go potty outside!!! She is trained to those puppy pads so it's not like she is doing it on my carpet but like in the winter she will REFUSE to go out - doesn't like cold or snow! UGH!!!!

Ship her to me! I LOVE those breeds, and a mix must be so cute. And I'm used to the super barky dogs anyway with the terrier. I had a Shih Tzu once. Best dog ever. But yes, not very dog-like, but I loved her and she was so good with kids.

Westies are great dogs. ......

At first glance I thought this said:
"Websites are great for dogs..." Holy mackerel! What will they think of next?!? Looks like Mary needs new reading glasses or a bigger monitor.

Congrats on your new best friend, I think.

So glad things are working out better with your puppy. I couldn't help but relate when I read this. My oldest (14 year old) has been doing volunteer work at our county animal shelter over the summer. Before he started we talked about the fact that he shouldn't get to attached to any of the dogs and financially there was no way we could afford another (we already have a Beagle). Well I'm the one having a hard time when I drop him off and see those poor dogs knowing the fate of many of them. Then the last time he went in first thing he told me when got in the car was about this Beagle they had just gotten in the shelter. I could hear the hidden message behind his voice - "I really want this dog, mom!" Hopefully she will be adopted but if not it will be hard not to give in.
