Top WAH Pitfalls

When you’re eager to become a Work-at-Home Mom, a rush to the money train can lead to make bad decisions. Here are the top WAH Pitfalls and how to avoid them.

  1. Joining a network marketing company you know nothing about- Never join an MLM that you haven’t researched. Even if your best friend is a member and claiming great results, do not invest a dime until you’ve done a Google and Better Business Bureau check.

  2. Joining a network marketing company that you don’t have a passion for – If eco-friendly cleaning products don’t light your fire, don’t represent a company that sells them. Passion is the #1 most important ingredient in any business venture.

  3. Buying a business you know nothing about – Never buy an existing business unless it’s in an industry you have experience in.

  4. Investing more dollars than time – Putting money into a business is no replacement for investing time. Research your business and ask questions of current business owners.

  5. Being scared – Don’t let the fear of not knowing where to start prevent you from taking the steps to become a work-at-home mom. The unknown doesn’t have to paralyze you. First step: Take the WAH Quiz!

  6. Getting so caught up in your business that you let your house, husband, and kids fall to the wayside. Remember: it’s family first, business second. Work-at-home moms need to learn how to work smart, not hard.

Five Tips for Networking Marketing Moms

Don’t listen to naysers, network marketing companies can be a great way to jumpstart your way into starting a own home business. They offer amazing personal support, structure, and minimal start-up costs. If you don’t have a business background, lack the funds to start a business from scratch, or just have fears about jumping into the world of entrepreneurship alone, it’s time to find an MLM!

Multilevel marketing has a bad rap because of pyramid schemes. Pyramid schemes are illegal organizations where people at the top make lots of money and eventually screw over those at the bottom. They key to finding a reputable network marketing company is to 1) Check its name with the Better Business Bureau, 2) Only go with one that you’ve heard of before (Avon, Tupperware, etc.), and 3) Use common sense: If they are selling timeshares on Pluto, it’s probably not legit.

I personally know mothers who are making six figures from their network marketing businesses. They are smart, hard working, and most importantly follow the keys to success that I’ll share below.

Keys to Network Marketing Success

  1. Find a company that you are passionate about: If you’re wacky for health products, give Melaleuca a shot. If you love cosmetics, Mary Kay might be right up your alley. And if you’re a lady on the outside but a naughty girl on the inside, you’ll probably love Passion Parties. Don’t sell soy candles just because it is the first company you came across. You will need that passion to get you through the slow times.
  2. Do not, I repeat, do not depend on your friends and family to be your main customers! It is fine to try out your sales presentation on those who care about you, but don’t invite them to party after party. Pretty soon they’ll be avoiding your phone calls. Generate your own leads through socializing.
  3. Find a mentor. Find someone who you truly admire within your company and latch on to them like a rash. Just kidding (sort of). Seek out an individual who is experiencing not only economic success, but personal success in their family and relationships to learn from. Be straight with them. Tell them you look up to them and want to learn.
  4. Don’t give up! In sales when you hear a “no” it is a sign that you aren’t communicating effectively. What would make you want to buy? Put yourself in your customer’s shoes. Refine and rewrite your strategy again and again. The difference between those who succeed and those who don’t is just a matter of who gives up first.

You can do this mom. We are natural communicators and are networking everyday of our lives. If you are serious about making money from home start researching network marketing companies today!

Do's

  1. Look everywhere - even in places that you wouldn't normally look for a job
  2. Use your talents - think about what you're good at
  3. Research - don't just jump into any job because you can work-at-home
  4. Put yourself out there - Be willing take a chance
  5. Go with your gut - if something sounds to good to be true it probably is

Don'ts

  1. Pay - NEVER pay anyone to get work without doing your homework.
  2. Invest money - do your research first
  3. Lose your focus - you want to work at HOME
  4. Sell yourself short - you are a smart woman
  5. Neglect your primary responsibilities - your kids, your husband, your home

Staying Organized

While working at home seems to be a dream, once you’ve finally achieved your goal, you need to stay motivated and on track. There are deadlines, phone calls to make, a home to take care of and don’t forget about the children! Focus is so important. It is imperative that the work-at-home mom keep business hours and home hours even though they take place in the same location.

Tips for staying organized:

  1. Set a schedule, but remain flexible.
  2. Don’t answer personal calls while you are working or work calls when you are supposed to be with your family
  3. Keep some type of a calendar system (day planner, blackberry, etc.) with home and work obligations in one place
  4. Have a separate work area.
  5. End your work day on schedule. Work will be there tomorrow. Your family needs you today.

Starting out

I cannot stress the importance of a business plan. It doesn’t matter if you are going to begin a babysitting service or run a million dollar corporation from your basement. A business plan will guide you and help you focus on what it important. Without one, you will be running in circles. Here is a comprehensive list, from the small business association, of all different types of business plans for almost every business imaginable. A business plan will help you determine where you are now, what you want to do and where you want to go. Never underestimate the power of a good plan! And if you are already running a business without a plan, there is no better time than the future to write one. Click here to look at sample business plans.

Q and A

Q. I love working from home, but I feel so isolated? How can I meet other women who work from home?

A. It’s very important as a work-at-home-mom and a housewife to keep involved with other stay-at-home women. While working at home is a great opportunity, it is very involved and can take up all of your free time. Make sure you don’t isolate yourself from your mommy groups or coffee klatch because you are too wrapped up in your work. This is especially important when beginning a new business.

One idea to keep in touch with your girlfriends is schedule it in just as you would a conference call. Whether it’s a phone call or a quick stop for lunch or coffee you need the break even if it’s every other week. Another idea is to join a women’s small business networking group. Many women are beginning to work from home, so you joining won’t be peculiar.

Remember, you can be an inspiration to other women. Get yourself out there and help stay-at-home housewives become work-at-home housewives and make a few friend while you’re at it!
