Who: Pam Myers
Business: Decorating Essentials, Clinton Township, MI
What: Workroom For Interior Design and Decorating Consultant
Back in September1996 Pam Myers was looking for a way to stay home with her 4 children and not have to work outside of the home. Back in an era where computers were just becoming popular along with the internet, an innovative Myers attempted to find something that would bring in money to support her family. Her husband, an entrepreneur as well, worked long hard hours in his outdoor maintenance business. Myers knew she did not want to leave her children in the care of a babysitter everyday, but she knew her household could not survive on just her husband’s income.
Instead of accepting defeat and going back to work, Myers did a slew of odd jobs. At one point she did sewing for a scam company that provided shotty materials and only paid if the outcome was excellent. At that point she decided to use her talents to open her own business out of her basement. She set up a work room and started knocking on doors with samples of a crib set she had made for her youngest daughter. She found her first client, a high end interior designer, who offered to give her a couple of pillows to sew. The owner was thoroughly impressed with her work and appreciated her talents. From that point Myers began sewing not only pillows but, window treatments, curtains and other household items. After she built her confidence, she found other decorators and designers who needed “workroom sewers”. She did not stop there, even while taking care of her children all day and working into the wee hours of the night, she persevered and pursued additional decorators and designers.
Several years later, when the children were all in school full-days, Myers expanded her business to have 7 women working part-time out of her home. With many intricate machines, tables covered in fabric and samples hanging on the walls, Myers is now, not only doing sewing for a couple of designers, but works with a project manager, for some of the top designers, in some of the most prestigious area of Michigan. She has done sewing for clients such as Eminem’s Michigan home and decedents of the famous Thomas Jefferson.
